5 Ways to Find Quality Candidates


Let’s face it - finding quality candidates can be tough.  And when you have dozens or hundreds of resumes for one job posting, how do you choose the best?  Where do you find them?  How do you screen them?  Below, you will find a short list with 5 ways to find quality candidates:

1. Stand Above the Crowd

Have you ever considered that your job posting is an ad?  It really is.  Quality candidates are finding your job posting in a sea of hundreds of other related jobs.  How does your job stand out amongst your competitors?  This is a different way to look at your job postings but if you can tackle this point and make adjustments to your job postings to make them stand out from the crowd, your likelihood of attracting a talented job seeker can go up dramatically.

2. What’s In It For Them

Closely related to the point above, why would someone want to work for you compared to your competition? What’s in it for the candidate? Putting yourself in the potential employees’ shoes can be quite enlightening in determining what key points to include in your job postings.  Include some of the benefits that you offer your employees like flexible hours, stock options, growth opportunities etc.  This can make the difference from a quality candidate saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to applying to your job.

3. SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)

Once you have the candidate sitting in your interview, how do you sift out the good from the bad? Conducting a SWOT analysis on the spot can help.  In a SWOT analysis, you can ask your candidate their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats to performing well at the job in question.  Not only will this help you determine who would be best for your job, but it also allows you to protect both your organization and the candidate to see if this really is the best fit for both parties.

4. Who’s In Your Network?

So how do you go about finding a new employee?  One of the easiest ways to go about finding a quality candidate is to ask your existing network of quality employees.  Ever heard of that term ‘Birds of a feather flock together’?  This holds true in that quality employees generally know others of similar calibre.  And if you really want to take this strategy up a notch, incorporate an employee referral incentive and hand out bonuses for successful hires. This will really help you bring in a pool of quality candidates into your office.
