Our Head Office Commercial Lines Underwriting Department is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the team as a Manager, Commercial Lines Head Office in our Head Office, Downtown Toronto.
SUMMARY
You will be responsible for managing the development, revision and strategic execution of specific assigned commercial lines functions in order to support corporate objectives of profitability and growth. You will evaluate the various functional responsibilities to ensure that the appropriate actions take place to support the corporate objectives of profitable growth. You will lead, coach and mentor National Coordinators and Underwriting Analysts in connection with these functional responsibilities. You will also participate as part of the Head Office commercial lines management team. You will work with a high degree of autonomy.
JOB DUTIES
- Develops training, and recommends and implements changes to existing commercial lines training, referral process, authority levels, product, guidelines, audit, wordings and pricing, to generate business opportunities and ensure a high level of profitable growth.
- Establishes and coordinates the efforts of a cross-functional team to provide training, referrals, authorities, marketing materials and other services the regions may require in order to develop and properly service our broker partners and customers. Manages the referral, process, training, coaching and authority for Commercial Lines business ensuring profitability, growth and cross-regional awareness.
- Coordinates commercial training, referral process and resulting systems work with Business Solutions team to ensure accurate and timely implementation of efficiencies.
- Reviews functional area for trends and developments, e.g. frequency of referrals in a particular class could lead to more guidelines or training to support. Develops an execution plan aligned with the Commercial Lines strategy and the identified trends.
- Develops business objectives and timetables for commercial training, to assist in the development of Commercial Lines staff.
- Works with Manager, Organizational Effectiveness and Head Office underwriting team to develop and deliver commercial lines underwriting training and ensure the continual development and retention of staff for the achievement of functional and corporate objectives.
- Participates in commercial lines file reviews in the various regional centres to ensure underwriting standards are being maintained and to ensure compliance with provincial regulations.
- Participates in corporate and industry committees to ensure that the interests of the department and the company are addressed.
SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Education
Minimum - Three year university degree or Insurance Institute designation (a college diploma with an insurance or business focus is an acceptable alternative to a university degree).
Experience
Minimum - Ten years progressive commercial lines underwriting experience. Management experience is an asset, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Technical Skills
- In depth knowledge of commercial lines automobile and property casualty underwriting, including rating structures.
- Ability to underwrite complex accounts.
- Understanding of the regulatory process, including all underwriting rules and, where necessary, filing requirements.
- Ability to analyze loss experience, and formulate rate and product recommendations.
- Computer literate (i.e. word processing and spreadsheet software).
