START YOUR INSURANCE CAREER BY JOINING THIS TRAINEE BUSINESS INTERN PROGRAM

The Business Intern Program provides an accelerated learning opportunity for recent university graduates, who are committed to pursuing insurance-related careers. Our corporately sponsored three-year program combines a hands-on approach to learning and is comprised of a rotational training component and the company-sponsored Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) program, run by the Insurance Institute of Canada.

Rotation through five key business units: Branch Underwriting, Head Office Underwriting, Claims, Risk Control and Corporate Services enables our Interns to supplement their CIP coursework with practical property and casualty experience, as well as gain a comprehensive understanding of the insurance industry and the Company’s role as a specialty insurer within the Canadian market.

ROTATIONAL DEPARTMENTS

Regional Branch Underwriting

The regional branch underwriting team is the core of the insurance process and is responsible for evaluating the acceptability of risk, and accepting or rejecting terms of insurance on behalf of the Company. Gain exposure to all aspects of the underwriting function including:
•Managing a profitable portfolio of business through our broker network.
•Evaluating, selecting and rating each risk: accept or decline submissions.
•Establishing standards of coverage and amount of protection.
•Developing and honing negotiation and relationship building skills.

Head Office Underwriting

The rotation will be project based and will focus on underwriting and business strategies including market segmentation and product development. By completing an internship in both Regional and Head Office Underwriting, Interns will gain a better understanding of the implications of the underwriting process as it relates to risk acceptance, claims exposures and profit potential. Interns will also have the opportunity to develop broker and customer relationships.

Claims

The Claims Department is the face of the company to our clients, specifically when our clients have a claim. Interns will be exposed to all aspects of claims handling, including opening and closing claims, reserve changes, payments and reporting requirements for the Company and for Reinsurers.
•Develop technical skills to adjudicate the claim in a fair and reasonable manner including investigating claims and quantifying damages.
•Complete special projects, which include compiling claims information for loss runs and other data for analysis and review.
•Focus on providing exceptional customer service to a variety of clients.

Risk Control/Customer Development

The Risk Control Department is client-focused and assists our clients with the identification of potential risks and the development of strategies to mitigate these risks. By completing this rotation Interns will gain a better understanding of risk, which will assist with the understanding of risk as it pertains to both Claims and Underwriting.
•Gain exposure to the function of Risk Control by job shadowing a Risk Control Specialist. This includes: on-site risk assessments and reviewing written reports.
•Interns will also leverage their knowledge and experience by providing both bottom-line and customer-focused solutions for one (or more) of our clients or an identified charitable organization. (This will be an on-site placement at the customer’s/ charity’s place of operation.)

Corporate Services

•Business Solutions: Interns will enhance their understanding of the technological platforms that support our business, as well as gain a comprehensive understanding of business requirements and project management techniques.
•Finance: Interns will develop an understanding of compliance, statutory reporting and the finance funnel.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES

•Possess a university degree preferably in business or liberal arts, from a recognized post-secondary learning institution. (A background or interest in 'Fine Arts' would be considered an asset.)
•Possess approximately 1 to 2 years of work experience in insurance.
