Director, Underwriting & Reciprocal Operations

Summary

As the leader in the Insurance Services team, the Director, Underwriting and Reciprocal Services will be responsible for overseeing a team of professionals that is relentlessly focused on supporting HIROC’s Subscribers. Reporting to the Vice President, Insurance Services, the role oversees all aspects of HIROC’s Reciprocal services including underwriting, account management, client systems, reporting, infrastructure and workflow development.

With these significant leadership opportunities and accountabilities, the successful candidate will have demonstrated effective people and leadership skills and aptitude, excellent communication skills, and be a self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating in a mid-sized agile organization, is process-oriented, and has a strong underwriting foundation in Property & Casualty Insurance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end operations of HIROC’s Reciprocal including underwriting, account management, back-office, and infrastructure.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and development of underwriting manuals including rating methodology, risk assessment/rating, applications, policy coverages, underwriting authority, and key workflows & processes.
  • Lead HIROC’s Coverage Review Committee that continually evaluates the insurance market and ensures responsiveness to changing risk environments.
  • Liaise with external service providers including actuaries, adjusters, reinsurers, consultants, lawyers, provincial regulatory commissions, HIROC’s board of directors, and Subscribers.
  • Lead the team’s customer service and partnership efforts by providing training, mentorship and support, managing escalations, and remaining as the primary insurance contract for HIROC’s largest Subscribers.
  • Oversight of the back-office operations of HIROC, including the production of various policy documentations such as renewal declarations, endorsements, third party certificates, and invoices.
  • Process re-engineer key workflows to identify opportunities to streamline and improve the customer experience.
  • Develop and monitor reports and key performance indicators to assess the Reciprocal’s underwriting performance and sustainability.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and customer service excellence, with an emphasis on supporting HIROC’s Subscribers
  • Accountability for the solicitation of new business opportunities and effective corporate response to those opportunities.
  • Other special projects and responsibilities as may arise or be assigned from time to time to achieve HIROC’s strategic goals.
  • Lead a diverse team by providing direction, delivering mentoring/coaching, conducting performance appraisals, and fostering personal development.
  • Manage the annual budget for the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate will have:

  • Insurance industry experience preferably including P&C (including medical malpractice) insurance.
  • Underwriting experience including the development and maintenance of policy language, rating methodology, standards and guidelines.
  • Strong staff development, coaching, and mentoring skills.
  • Strong skills in planning and operationalizing complex projects and achieving results.
  • An innovative and creative thinker who is open to different approaches to resolving issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership initiative and a desire to learn and develop in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • The ability to partner and communicate effectively with various stakeholders such as the senior leadership group, boards of directors, government organizations, and Subscribers.
  • Strong business acumen, strategic planning, organizational, and creative thinking skills
  • Passion for creating the safest health care system possible for Canadians.

Education, Training & Experience

  • At least 10+ years of progressive work experience in insurance industry or equivalent, with direct experience with underwriting (including medical malpractice), and competence in strategic planning, operations management, leading teams, and account management. 
  • 5+ years of managerial experience.
  • Recognized insurance industry designation (Certifications such as CRM, RPLU, CAIB, CIP, FCIP, CCIB).
  • Post-secondary school education and/or equivalent on-the-job experience
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of underwriting discipline and pricing models.
  • Valid Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle preferred.
  • Most importantly, you are an enthusiastic and creative thinker who is passionate about creating the safest.

Compensation

A competitive compensation package, including base salary, bonus, DB pension, and benefits, will be provided.
