Position Title: Senior Claims Specialist

Location: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing claims settlements for the company and customer
  • Perform policy reviews
  • Establish, revise and validate case reserves as necessary
  • Initiate and maintain control recovery activities, including reinsurance on claims
  • Negotiates claim settlements, inputs and approve payments
  • Direct, monitor and control investigations
  • Assist the VP of Claims to direct and manage the performance of independent service providers
  • Adjudicate claims
  • Advise underwriters of any facts reflecting upon the insurability of risk
  • Contributes to the design and implementation of claims policies, processes and procedures, products

Skills, Education, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Community college diploma or undergraduate university degree
  • CIP designation (or working towards completion)
  • 10+ years of commercial claims experience
  • Knowledge of:
    • property and casualty insurance
    • claims & claims management
    • principles and practices of adjusting
    • notification; case reserves; control recovery activities (including reinsurance on claims)
    • investigation; adjudication; claims settlements and closures
  • Excellent knowledge, skills and experience in working with outside claims – para-professional and professional experts (investigators, reinsurers, lawyers and financial experts)
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to communicate openly and effectively at all levels


  • You must have broad knowledge of financial management, the nature of insurance risk and reinsurance programs; industry/business objectives, issues, players, legislation, regulations; specialty insurance core markets or not for profit
  • Demonstrated track record of planning, organizing and completing; by integrating own results with the results of other individuals and participating in projects that complement professional or managerial functions and programs
  • Demonstrable knowledge, skill and experience to independently manage routine claims and more complex claims through research and diagnosis; recommending courses of action that integrate with following business decisions
