Position Overview:

The Underwriting Team Leader will be responsible to supervise the day-to-day activities and performance of our Underwriting Specialist Team as well as our Claims Specialist(s).  As a key leader in the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Personal Lines Team, the Underwriting Team Leader coaches and manages team members towards their individual goals, ensuring key performance metrics are met. 

Position Requirements and Experience

Education and Experience Requirement:

  1. Post-Secondary education in insurance or a related field
  2. 7+ years’ experience in personal lines insurance with at least 5 years in a customer service or underwriting role
  3. RIBO or OTL licensed
  4. Previous supervisory experience is an asset
  5. Sound knowledge of all personal lines insurance with ability to analyze and interpret policy wording and legal documents
  6. Demonstrate efficiency and priority management skills to meet service standards
  7. Experience working in a fast paced, multi-task environment
  8. Demonstrated ongoing personal development

  3. Advanced knowledge of personal lines underwriting and claims management principles
  4. Advanced knowledge of Personal Lines products, coverages and limitations

What You’ll Do:

Underwriting Team Leader Objectives:

  1. Develop, Coach/Mentor and manage the performance of Direct Reports
  2. Manage the day to day underwriting operation for the team ensuring workflows efficiently support the departmental goals
  3. Review all new Business and all remarket for all branches
  4. Guide Underwriters in the analysis of relevant data and reports to effectively determine risk hazards and make accurate policy selection and pricing decisions
  5. Provide support regarding policy interpretation, underwriting policies and standards and act as a subject matter expert in the area of insurance processes, regulations and audits
  6. Act as a point of escalation for broker inquires and concerns as they relate to the team
  7. Contribute to the performance standard requirements of all team members while working with the Director to establish goals, targets and deadlines for team members
  8. Participate in research initiated by claims or for underwriting investigations
  9. Participate in annual business planning, resource planning and goal setting with the Director and peer team

Customer Service Objectives:      

  1. Ensure team members’ client relations and customer service tasks are completed meeting the customer service standards of the team
  2. Identify and proactively address service issues as well as data quality concerns for team
  3. Keying new business, submitting to carriers and confirming in portals when applicable
  4. Oversee the effective negotiation of the terms and conditions of risk acceptance and pricing with brokers
  5. Submit New Business to carriers as required

 Retention Objectives:

  1. Develop and manage relationships with internal business partners on a professional basis
  2. Determine eligibility for policy renewals based on guidelines and retention goals of the company
  3. Underwrite and authorize the acceptance of new business in a timely manner to develop and retain profitable business
  4. Maintain excellent awareness and understanding of the marketplace and keep informed of industry developments though review of trade press and, when directed by Personal Lines Manager, attend insurance carrier training meetings on new products
  5. Possess sound knowledge of broker/insurance company relationships and the ability to apply this to the Underwriting of an account

 Meet Underwriting Guidelines Objectives:

  1. Ensure that endorsements, renewals, reinstatements and cancellations are examined and analyzed in accordance with our corporate standards and guidelines
  2. Consistently adhere to both established internal rating strategies and carrier specific underwriting criteria
  3. Maintain accurate electronic and/or paper files of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data in an orderly, up-to-date manner, as per procedural guidelines
  4. Conduct periodic work reviews and quality control file audits to ensure established standards and authorized limits are in accordance with established company guidelines, applicable laws and regulations
  5. Assist with special projects
