Job Description

The Underwriting Manager is responsible for leading the underwriting team in Toronto and to ensure that the company has a viable and profitable overall book of business by servicing complex accounts in accordance with established guidelines and business objectives in the achievement of national standards for data quality and service levels.

Title: Underwriting Manager, Commercial Lines

Location: Downtown Toronto


  • Responsible for providing leadership, support and guidance to the underwriting team in Toronto
  • Establishing Underwriting goals and objectives according to Guidelines
  • Ensuring that the underwriting team complies with the goals and objectives
  • Responsible for all aspects of underwriting that include but not limited to underwriting new business; developing policy wording when needed; having good understanding of Natural Catastrophe Accumulation, and interpreting of scenarios based on the catastrophe modelling
  • Providing answers to Underwriting related inquiries from other regions
  • Developing and maintaining a professional relationship with brokers and/or customers to enhance understanding of the target market
  • Maintaining knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes including competitive analysis and information
  • Collaborating with brokers and customers to assist in business retention and customer satisfaction through regular interactions
  • Understanding and applying best business practices towards compliance, internal control and operational risk controls in accordance to national standards and regulatory standards and policies. Also, assisting in the risk management process and carrying out annual risk assessment with The Compliance Officer;
  • Monitoring trends and developments identifying areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies
  • Responsible for other duties as required


  • 15 + years of P&C industry insurance experience – all lines
  • Post-secondary school education and/or equivalent on the job experience
  • Must hold FCIP/CRM accreditations 
  • A self-starter, highly confident and able to work independently
  • Ability to foster and build good long-term working relationships with peers, brokers, customers and business areas inside and outside the work unit
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Demonstrated proficiency and resourcefulness in identifying and analyzing relevant data and defining critical issues and alternatives
  • Able to work with long-term perspective
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional and technical development
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
