Job Description


The primary function of this position is to analyze the acceptability of personal Property & Casualty insurance business according to company guidelines by working collaboratively with our sales force and providing value added expertise and service to both potential and existing policyholders. This is achieved through effective underwriting decision making, mutually beneficial agent/brokers relationships, and application of underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources. A secondary function will entail leading and mentoring 1-2 junior underwriters.

Primary Responsibilities:

Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations to review, underwrite and document new and renewal policy transactions, within authority.

Evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing as per basic underwriting requirements. Refer applications or endorsements requests for further underwriting analysis by carrier on an as-required basis.

Review paperwork and/or applications for signatures, dates and other considerations to ensure that coverage may be issued. Verify coverage limits, perform necessary calculations and complete other checks before forwarding to processing team.

Order, review and take appropriate action on required reports, endorsement requests, service requests and general correspondence.

Analyze individual risk pricing for new business submissions and renewals against template expectations, and assists making appropriate changes within authority.

Communicate with brokers to obtain information needed to underwrite risks, respond to questions and address issues.

Underwrite new business, renewals and endorsements by assessing the acceptability of the risk, and factors affecting the potential for loss.

Maintain service levels, achieve your performance targets, and have the ability to comprehensively discuss and plan with your leader for optimal performance.

Contribute to continuous improvement of work processes and procedures.

Maintain accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data

Determine eligibility for policy renewals based on guidelines and retention goals of the company.

Communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner

Understand rating procedures, wordings, underwriting policies and regulations

Handle work assignments efficiently

Work effectively towards the goals of the team

Build positive working relationships with internal and external parties

Perform other duties as assigned
