Underwriting Manager-Reporting to the President & CEO

Hybrid - Office is located in Kemptville, ON

The Underwriting Manager is primarily responsible for the people, processes and implementation of technology for our underwriting and loss prevention functions by providing exceptional leadership, support and guidance to the Underwriting Team and ensuring the team has a customer centric mindset whereby they are exceeding service expectations.   This leader will continue to drive a collaborative and customer satisfaction-based and culture.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Create, implement and evolve customer and distribution experience
  • Oversight of a team of insurance professionals ensuring understanding of expectations and timelines
  • Provide guidance on complex applications and in depth understanding of underwriting guidelines
  • Build a high performing, service-oriented team
  • Coach and mentor the team’s soft skills including relationship management, negotiation, conflict resolution and sales skills
  • Develop, implement, monitor and continuously improve processes and service standards
  • Establish and monitor department goals and objectives applying best practices to processes and procedures to support customer expectations continually improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of the Underwriting Team
  • Create and implement an internal audit process for the Underwriting Team
  • Partner with the Technology team to maximize opportunities for automation
  • Conduct Underwriting Team reviews and report on Team performance
  • Accountable for achievement of revenue targets for all lines of business, in partnership with the Manager, Product & Pricing
  • Manage escalations from external and internal stakeholders
  • Set and deliver an annual budget for Underwriting Operations
  • Manage and maintain distribution partner relationships
  • Identify distribution partner training needs and work with Manager, Product & Pricing to develop and deliver appropriate education programs
  • Respond to any business-critical issues that may arise outside of regular business hours

 

Key Qualifications & Attributes

  • University Degree/College Diploma and/or CIP/FCIP Designation
  • A minimum of 8 years experience in the insurance industry
  • Exceptional people leadership with quick decision-making in response to change
  • Knowledge of general insurance products and pricing
  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills to forge trusted relationships
  • Experienced establishing and delivering annual operations budgets
  • Proven experience streamlining efficiencies and implementing processes
  • Self driven, customer focused and service oriented
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives and tasks
  • Adaptable, intuitive and work with a sense of urgency
  • Results driven, influential and confident in motivating others
  • Unwavering commitment to a collaborative work environment
  • Technically savvy with strong knowledge of policy administration software
