Overview

Working with our distributors to help their clients is at the core of our client’s Underwriting. Our underwriters specialize in group disability products while offering the full range of pooled employee benefit programs. We are continuously improving our underwriting technology to free the team up to spend more time with clients. We believe that technology must support the human conversation rather than replace it. Our focus is on engaging with our distributors to understand their clients’ needs and provide them with leading products and service. Reporting into the Director, Underwriting this position plays an integral role on the underwriting team with opportunity for growth.    The company is an innovator which launches new, focused, and unique specialty programs that provide our partners with the tools needed to succeed. The company’s success has been powered by an ability to create strong relationships with third party administrators, partners, brokers and their customers.  We are primarily remote  but recognize that there is still value in meeting in person and We have moved to full-time remote while recognizing that projects and team meetings may occasionally require 1-2 days per week at the office.

Major Responsibilities
• Underwrite new business quote requests and policy renewals of Life and Disability products, as well as plan amendments to ensure we are writing competitive but profitable business
 • Develop relationships with existing and new distribution partners
• Act as a subject matter expert for brokers and clients, and identify ways the company’s disability product portfolio can address client concerns
• Provide product training and expertise in person or via video conferencing
• Work with your colleagues and the company’s leaders to identify opportunities and solutions for product and process improvement
 • Work with carrier partners
• Participate in RFP responses and potentially participate in finalist presentations
 • Create reports and supporting analysis for internal and external stakeholders
• Work across all departments to solve client issues, challenges, and escalations
• Mentor junior underwriting team members and service team members
 • Handle account service and exception requests, pricing negotiations, and general inquiries
 Attributes
• Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
• Expert Excel capabilities
• Comfortable in a client facing role
• Expert knowledge of group benefits acquired through a minimum of 3 - 5 years of group benefits experience, ideally in an underwriting capacity
• University degree in finance, economics, business, or mathematics
 • Actuarial studies or experience an asset
• Strong analytical focus and understanding of pricing an asset
• The ability to operate in a fast-paced environment in a rapidly evolving organization
• Willingness to travel for in person meetings
