Product Development Specialist, Commercial Auto

 

Our client, a well-established and forward-thinking Canadian insurer, is expanding its Product & Underwriting team. They are seeking an experienced Underwriting & Product Development Specialist to play a key role in advancing underwriting excellence and product innovation across multiple lines of business, with particular emphasis on automobile.

 

Reporting to senior leadership within Underwriting and Product Strategy, this position blends technical underwriting expertise with analytical insight and cross-functional collaboration.

 

The Opportunity

 

In this role, you will act as a subject matter expert and strategic partner to underwriting teams across the organization. You will contribute to product enhancements, regulatory compliance initiatives, and underwriting best practices that support profitable growth.

 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical underwriting guidance to regional teams, including interpretation of coverage wordings, pricing considerations, and risk evaluation standards
  • Review performance across lines of business, geographic territories, and market segments, delivering insights and recommendations
  • Participate in and support enterprise-wide initiatives and cross-departmental projects
  • Serve as a liaison between branches to ensure consistent underwriting practices and communication
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and enhance operational efficiency through education and coaching
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts, ensuring adherence to provincial and federal requirements
  • Assist in audit planning and execution, including technical file reviews and post-audit recommendations
  • Contribute to reinsurance analysis and portfolio exposure monitoring
  • Work collaboratively with operations and compliance teams to address findings and implement corrective action plans
  • Support product updates, rating modifications, and filing requirements across jurisdictions
  • Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and regulatory developments
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current in underwriting and product best practices
  • Provide training support and contribute to technical learning initiatives as required

 

 

Requirements: 

 

  • CIP or FCIP designation ( or working towards)
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive underwriting experience (multi-line background preferred)
  • Strong exposure to automobile underwriting and product considerations
  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles, pricing, and coverage structures
  • Knowledge of regulatory reporting and industry standards
  • Analytical strength with a detail-oriented approach
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience supporting or leading underwriting-related projects
  • Experience delivering training or mentoring peers considered an asset
  • Familiarity with Guidewire or similar policy administration systems is advantageous
