Job Description

This is a senior underwriting role on a growing specialty commercial property book within a global insurance group. You'll be joining a small, expert with the mandate to diversify and expand the portfolio beyond its current energy-heavy composition — bringing in complex, large commercial property risks across heavy manufacturing, large warehousing/logistics, and big-box/complex retail.

The Canadian book currently sits at over $40million in handled premium, with typical structures being quota share participations. You'll be working on genuinely complex, bespoke risks, not mid-market packages.

Title: AVP Specialty Property Underwriter

Location: Downtown Toronto (Hybrid)

What You'll Be Doing

  • Building and managing a portfolio of large, complex commercial property risks sourced through the broker market
  • Evaluating submissions, pricing risks, and negotiating manuscript wordings and bespoke contract structures
  • Working as part of a multi-market quota share
  • Developing broker relationships and maintaining an active marketing presence in the Canadian specialty property market
  • Collaborating with pricing, claims, and underwriting peers globally to share intelligence and maintain underwriting consistency
  • Identifying and researching new areas for profitable portfolio growth

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of specialty/complex commercial property underwriting experience
  • Hands-on experience with high-hazard and large risk-managed
  • Comfort with quota share placements and multi-subscriber slips (3–5 markets)
  • Strong grasp of manuscript wordings and bespoke risk structures
  • Established relationships within the Canadian broker network for complex commercial property
  • Energy underwriting experience is a genuine bonus, but not required
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Bachelor's degree required; engineering background or CIP/FCIP designation an asset

The Environment

You'll be part of a global, product-oriented structure where technical expertise drives decisions, not geography. The team is small enough that your contributions are visible but backed by global capacity and an international peer network. If you're a specialist who wants to work on genuinely interesting risks with smart colleagues, this is a strong fit.

Salary Range $160, 000 to $195, 000.
