Job Description

Our client is a growing specialty insurance organization seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial underwriter to join its Professional and Specialty Liability team. This role offers the opportunity to manage and expand a profitable portfolio while building strong relationships with brokers and carrier partners.

The successful candidate will play a key role in underwriting new and renewal business, driving production, and contributing to the continued growth of a well-established specialty insurance operation.

Title: Professional Liability Underwriter

Location: Downtown Toronto (Hybrid)

Key Responsibilities

  • Professional & Specialty Liability Underwriting
  • Underwrite new business submissions from retail brokers
  • Evaluate and negotiate renewal opportunities
  • Manage and maintain an existing book of business
  • Develop new business opportunities through broker relationships
  • Achieve assigned production and profitability objectives
  • Ensure service standards are consistently met
  • Support the growth of specialty liability products including:
    • Medical Malpractice and Healthcare Liability
    • Professional Liability (E&O)
    • Directors & Officers Liability (D&O)

Portfolio Management

  • Monitor broker performance and production results
  • Review portfolio profitability and make underwriting adjustments as required
  • Maintain disciplined underwriting practices and profitable risk selection
  • Provide reporting and portfolio insights to senior leadership
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support business growth initiatives

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience
  • Experience underwriting Professional Liability, D&O, E&O, Medical Malpractice
  • MGA or specialty insurance experience is considered an asset
  • RIBO, CIP, FCIP, or progress toward designation is preferred
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent industry experience
  • Strong understanding of insurance principles, risk assessment, pricing, and portfolio management
  • Knowledge of industry regulations, market trends, and underwriting best practices
  • Proven business development and broker relationship management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and underwrite complex commercial risks
