Underwriting Manager – Commercial Mid-Market

The Opportunity
A well-established national commercial insurer is seeking an experienced Underwriting Manager to support its Commercial Mid-Market in Vancouver.
This role is heavily focused on people leadership and team development, with a hands-on underwriting component. The successful candidate will play a key role in mentoring underwriters, strengthening broker relationships, and ensuring underwriting quality and profitability across the portfolio.
While prior management titles are not mandatory, candidates must bring demonstrated leadership experience (formal or informal).
What You’ll Be Doing

Lead, coach, and develop a team of commercial underwriters, fostering performance, engagement, and professional growth

Provide underwriting guidance and oversight on complex construction and contracting risks

Maintain accountability for underwriting quality, profitability, and adherence to guidelines

Collaborate closely with brokers to structure solutions tailored to mid-market commercial clients

Support change initiatives, workflow improvements, and best-practice adoption

Participate in key broker meetings and maintain a visible presence within the office and local market

Act as a trusted resource across underwriting, claims, and actuarial partners
What We’re Looking For

Strong background in commercial underwriting, ideally within construction and contracting risks (carrier or brokerage experience considered)

Prior leadership, mentorship, or supervisory experience (direct or indirect)

Ability to balance people leadership with hands-on underwriting support

Strong relationship management and communication skills

Experience operating within a broker-distribution environment

Professional insurance designations (CIP required; FCIP, CRM, or similar considered an asset)

Compensation: Base salary $115,000–$140,000 + annual bonus. The listed salary range is an estimate for this role. Final compensation will depend on factors such as experience, skills, education, and internal equity.
